2014 Burton US Open Presented By MINI: Top Halfpipe Runs
Shared By: Burton | March 10, 2014
An overall young field of halfpipe competitors showed that style is alive and well in snowboarding during the Burton US Open presented by MINI. Vail, Colorado's halfpipe was home to some of the most stylish and progressive riding witnessed in a while as the men and women competed for a chunk of the cash purse. It was a tight battle on the men's side, but Taylor Gold prevailed over Taku Hiraoka and David Habluetzel with massive airs including some technical chicken salad and roast beef grabbed doubles, to take home his first US Open title. With a perfect pipe, amplitude didn't seem to be an issue as every rider looked to be boosting higher than ever with a combination of tweaked grabs and smooth spins.
On the women's side, Kelly Clark took home her record-setting seventh US Open title, and she did it with her signature style including huge amplitude and 1080s. Queralt Castellet strung together a 2nd place run with some large airs and high rotations for her first US Open podium. Wrapping up the podium was 13-year old Chloe Kim, who has been on a tear lately. Her smooth, technical style was only magnified with her switch run which included a switch methods and handful of switch spins, a la Danny Davis, earning her the 3rd place spot. Garnering almost as much attention as the finalists, poached runs from Terje Haakonsen, Scotty Lago, Danny Davis and more showed that the US Open is not the typical contest as they demonstrated to the crowd the power of the method grab.
