Kelly Marren Interview
Interviewer: Jackie Williams
Interview Location: Breckenridge, CO
Interview Date: 2009-12-20
What year did your start riding?:
What do you do in the offseason?: I go to college. I am a freshman at Stanford University and I love it!
Who are your favorite riding buddies: Kaitlyn Farrington, Maddy Schaffrick
What do you like most about snowboarding? I love being scared of something and trying it anyway.
Who do you admire? My Brothers. They find the fun in any given situation and don't letme take myself too seriously.
Where have you traveled lately? I spent a month in Colorado, Thanksgiving through Christmas pretty much, for this year, but last year I got to travel to Japan for the World Champs and Korea World Champs. It was my first trip to Asia and my favorite part was definitely seeing snow monkey
Have you done well in any contest lately? 4th Place Dew Tour Superpipe
Encouraging words for beginners? Stick through the first couple of sore bum days and you'll get to see the fun.
What are you plans for this season? (i.e. events, travel, videos, etc.) A crazy amount of competetions: 4 more Grand Prixs, 2 more Dew Tours, X Games, US Open, maybe World Cup? We'll see! I actually love competing, though. I love having the half pipe to myself and a moment where its do or die. I perform for a crowd in a way I
What do you think of you results for this event? I'm stoked
What is your strategy for the finals?
WHAT HAVE YOU READ/LISTENED TO/SEEN LATELY THAT YOU'RE INTO? I just finished The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junior Diaz. It's a really exciting, funny book about Dominican culture and Americanization and it has made me think about how heritage shapes a person. Plus, it is intermixed with Spanish phrases and has reminded me how much I love Spanish and need to keep up with it!
ANYTHING NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT YOU THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?: This fall I became an Earth Aid Fellow (Earth Aid is a new company that helps household reduce their carbon footprint and save money on their energy bill plus it rewards them for their saving). I went canvassing door to door to get families to join earthaid.net and businesses to offer discounts to participating families. I learned how hard it was to sell people on any new ideas even if the service is free.
