WHISTLER BLACKCOMB INFO

Consistently rated North America's #1 ski and snowboard resort, Whistler continues to raise the level of mountain excitement for its guests. Located a scenic two-hour drive north of the Vancouver International Airport, up the spectacular Sea to Sky Highway, this resort is home to two epic ski mountains – Whistler and Blackcomb.

Known worldwide as an innovator in the ski industry, Whistler Blackcomb is living up to its reputation with the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, which launched December 2008. Breaking three world records, the gondola connects Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains in the alpine allowing guests to make the most of their day while taking in the breathtaking sights.

Environmental stewardship has always been a top priority at Whistler Blackcomb. This past spring Whistler Blackcomb impressed Golden Eagle Awards judges and won the coveted award with its comprehensive approach to environmental stewardship opening a hydroelectric facility on its property that will generate enough energy—33 gigawatt hours of hydro-electricity—to match its total annual energy consumption. The hydro facility, seven years in the development, is a partnership of Innergex Renewable Energy Inc., Ledcor Power Group and Whistler Blackcomb.

In total, Whistler and Blackcomb mountains offer 13 alpine bowls, three glaciers and more than 200 marked trails. The resort has more terrain (8,171 acres) than any other resort in North America and one mile of vertical. The varied terrain is ideal for the resort’s multi-faceted children's programs, adult clinics and on- and off-piste guiding services. It has the world's most advanced high-speed lift system, with 17 express lifts and a total of 38 lifts.

Whistler Blackcomb receives an average annual snowfall of 10.25 metres (33.6 feet) and last season was no exception coming in as the second snowiest season on record with almost 15 metres (49 feet). The resort boasts one of the longest ski seasons in North America - from November through May - with summer glacier skiing on Blackcomb Mountain June through July.

Born to host the Games Whistler Blackcomb realized it’s five decade long dream last year hosting the alpine skiing events at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games on Whistler Mountain. The famous Dave Murray Downhill, named in memory of legendary Crazy Canuck Dave Murray, was used for the men’s downhill race. The women raced on Wildcard and mid to lower Franz’s Trail. Guests looking to experience a piece of Olympic legacy are able to ski and ride the Olympic downhill courses and take their photo with the Olympic rings near where Olympians and Paralympians crossed the finish line.

Whistler Blackcomb has an excellent learn to ski/ride children's program and Whistler itself is the perfect year-round family resort destination with dozens of activities for kids of all ages. New to Whistler Kids and for the Ride Tribe is a real-time tracking solution called FLAIK, which consists of a GPS tag worn by skiers and riders.

Playgrounds are situated beside the cafés so parents can relax while the kids play. When kids need a little down time, Whistler has video stores, pizza places and fast food establishments. And when parents need a little down time of their own, Whistler has excellent babysitting and nanny services. If kids are a little older (in the “tween” age range), they can check out the resort’s Luna events; Luna (Late and Unique Nighttime Alternatives), presents high-energy social events for young adults in Whistler. Featuring sports, movies, DJ parties, and the great outdoors, it’s everything wild and wonderful Whistler has to offer.

Besides downhill skiing and boarding, Whistler is home to a variety of other activities including daytime or evening sleigh rides, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, winter fishing, dog sledding and zip trekking. This winter, visitors can appreciate new Winter Games legacies including Whistler Olympic Park for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, biathlon experience and self-guided walking tours; and Whistler Sliding Centre for guided and self-guided walking tours and the exciting Public Sport Experience Program offering piloted bobsleigh rides and skeleton rides.

Whistler Resort has four charming village areas with a variety of options in accommodations which include everything from ski-in, ski-out convenience to lodging in Whistler Village, Upper Village, Village North and the newly developed Whistler Creekside. Many Whistler accommodations offer kitchen facilities. All areas offer fantastic dining and nightlife options, along with an excellent selection of shops, galleries and spas.

Whistler comes alive throughout the year with events of all shapes and sizes; two signature events include April’s legendary TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival with 10 non-stop days of music, sports and arts celebrations, and August's Kokanee Crankworx, a jaw-dropping spectacle of some of the hottest mountain biking in the world. Other resort-wide events include the Whistler Film Festival, Cornucopia Wine and Food Festival, WinterPRIDE, the Whistler Children’s Art Festival, Deep Winter Challenge, and many more.
