This morning, January 26, is day one of the International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Association(IFSA) Junior Freeride Competition hosted here at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. They certainly chose a good weekend for the competition as we’ve received almost 5′ of snow in the past 10 days here in Northwest Wyoming, with another 7″ falling Friday as the riders and skiers inspected the course while dialing in their lines. We’ve got athletes from across the region including Jackson Hole, Teton Valley, Big Sky, Winter Park, Sun Valley, Bridger Bowl, Park City, and Mad River Glen (shout out to the east coast!). These athletes have descended upon Toilet Bowl to showcase their style and grit among the features, as judges watch below and determine the qualifiers for tomorrow. Sunday morning we’ll have the finals in Tower 3 Chute if conditions permit, with an awards banquet to follow in the Olympic Room of the Olympic Sports Plaza adjacent to Teton Mountain Lodge. The running order will be the same both days with the U12 females skiers kicking it off.

Freeriders are scored based on line choice, fluidity, technique, control, and style as they navigate through natural terrain featuring trees, steeps, cliffs, chutes, drops, and gullies where they are rewarded for using the features creatively. Judges for this weekends competition will be Johnny Manwarring, Ryan Cruze, Matt Lancaster. Each of whom has spent time on the competition circuit growing up and continue their pursuits in the mountains. Safe to say, they’re worth judges!

Remember, this event isn’t possible without the help of Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club, JHMR Ski Patrol, and JHMR Race Crew – so if you see these hard workers on the hill give ’em a high five! With that being said, come on out and join us Sunday off Amphitheater run as DJ Era plays fresh beats, Jeff Moran keeps you in the know, and you may even learn a trick or two from these youngsters! Spectators are welcome and we hope you enjoy your weekend on the hill! Good luck to all the competitors.
We’ll be updating this blog with results from both days, so stay posted for those.
