Hi there, I am Julie Calder from the Sales and Marketing team, and this is my third piece with the Get Local series. Last year I wrote about horseback riding as well as hiking in Teton Village with my kids, Avery and Hannah. This time, we decided to do something different and go to the Jackson Hole Rodeo!
As we approach fair week, July 22-30, 2017, a big deal for local families in Jackson Hole, we decided to check out the Jackson Hole rodeo. First stop, get outfitted. There are some musts in visiting the rodeo with kids: it’s really fun to get cowboy boots and a hat- kids love this. We visited the Boot Barn located a couple of miles from the rodeo grounds as well as Big R Ranch Shop which are great stores for western wear. Of course, we also got some cool jeans and western shirts to complete the look. If you run out of time, you can even buy cowboy hats at the rodeo for one stop shopping.
Then it was time to head over to the rodeo grounds. Ticket options range from open seating on the ends to reserved grandstand and covered seating in the middle of the arena. Check out jhrodeo.com for complete ticket details. We had the outdoor seats and it was really fun to be close to the action! We got seated and the girls immediately wanted to ride the mechanical bull. Look easy? Not so much…. They rode until they were bucked off and immediately wanted another turn….
Immediately following, the action starts with a bang- bull riding! This is an amazing fete and the girls loved it. 8 seconds feels like a lifetime and Hannah quickly remarked that she would love to ride a bull! (stay tuned for a post Fair recap of mutton busting).
The rodeo also includes: bareback riding, saddle broncs, team roping and barrel racing. There is a lot of action to watch but there is also participation… Introducing the calf (sheep) scramble. All kids are invited into the arena to try their hands at removing bandannas from sheep released into the arena. There are 2 sheep and maybe 100 kids. It is quite a sight.
Avery and Hannah were ready and they thought that this was going to be an easy task: run fast, get the bandanna, win the prize (a great prize- tickets to the aerial tram in Teton Village) and go for ice cream. Well, it is not so easy (like the mechanical bull).
First, the sheep are fast, really fast. Second, the footing in the arena is a little bit deep (think drag) and third, there is traffic in the form of lots of kids. Hannah and Avery took off running and they ran fast. The sheep ran faster. They both fell down, a soft landing, but a little dirty. We didn’t get the bandanas or win the prize. Hannah was mad; Avery tried to reason with her. But, this was fun, I mean really fun.
If you have kids and visit Jackson Hole, this is not to be missed. This is not something you can do in too many places and the Jackson Hole rodeo is an authentic western experience. The rodeo takes place every Wednesday and Saturday from Memorial day until labor day weekend and a few Fridays in July.
We will now embrace the full fair experience. If you are visiting Jackson Hole next week you should check this out. It is an authentic county fair with carnival rides, corn dogs, fried dough, 4H exhibits, a petting zoo, Budweiser Clydesdales, pony rides, a ninja warrior exhibit, pig wrestling, figure 8s, and of course the rodeo!
