Wie gehtz Philipp Kundratitz? Okay, so you don’t speak German? “Wie gehtz” translates to “What’s up” in German, and for this profile piece we head over to the glaciers in Austria to catch up with European Flow Team Athlete Philipp Kundratitz. Kundratitz has been hitting the podium in multiple competitions last year in Europe and is fixing for even bigger wins this winter. A native to Austria, Kundratitz grew up in the heart of the Alps, not too far from the birthplace of Flow Snowboarding. Children start skiing and snowboarding at the young age of four in the Alps. While most Americans have recess or physical education, most schools in the Alps make it a point to bring entire classrooms up to the slopes. Kundratitz was one of these kids back in the days, now has grown into the competitive threat he has become, with lofty goals.

Where is home for you?

Home for me is in Innsbruck where I grew up. It´s cool to just hang out with my friends and family. I´m always happy to go back home after a long trip.

What do you consider to be your home mountain?

My home mountain is just 5 minutes walk from where I live. It´s called Seegrube. It´s just a very small resort above Innsbruck, but it´s always lots of fun up there. Just cruising with my friends from home. Good times and good memories!

What is your current snowboard set up? Boots, Board, Bindings? Do you switch it up for park and powder?

I´m riding a Blackout 156cm with a NX-2 Hybrid Binding and Hylite Boots. I didn´t get to ride so much powder lately because last winter wasn´t that good, but I usually just use the same board all the time.

Do you listen to music when you snowboard?

I used to do it all the time when I was younger but now I like to ride without music because I find it easier to concentrate and I like to hear the sound of the snow below me.

Did you start skiing first or has it always been snowboarding?

No I started with skiing when I was a little kid but luckily I started snowboarding and found out that it is way more fun!

Where was the first place you went snowboarding? How old were you?

It was on my home mountain. I think I was around 8 years old.

Who were your influences and inspiration snowboarding?

I don´t really have one rider that is my inspiration. I just watch a lot of snowboarding videos and when I think that a trick looks really cool then I try it out myself.

Who are your current sponsors?

I ride for Flow Snowboards, Billabong Outerwear, VonZipper Goggles, Icetools Snowequipment, Love Streetwear and my local Billabong Store.

How was the winter in Austria this year?

Last year was really bad, we didn´t get a lot of snow so it was really icy all the time. Let´s hope this year will be better!

If an American was planning a snowboarding trip to Austria, what resorts are a must they check out?

My favorite resorts are Mayrhofen and Flachauwinkl. They both have super nice parks and I would probably recommend to there.

Where was your favorite place to snowboard this season?

Probably Laax. I went there in April for the Pleasure Spring Session. They had a super fun setup and I could just ride without any pressure with my friends.

What are some of your favorite apres ski activities?

Usually just chill in the hotel or at home and watch TV Shows. Sometimes I work out after snowboarding as well, but that depends on how tired I am after snowboarding.

Are you planning on a snowboardtrip this season? Where?

Yes I´m going to the US in December and then maybe again in February. Should be lots of fun!

Where is your favorite place to travel, not related to snowboarding?

I always love to go on summer vacations. Doesn´t really matter where, I just like to chill at the beach and know that I have nothing to do!

How did you manage to get in the Austrian national snowboardteam, and what are your goals in the near future?

I had some good results in contests so they asked me to join the team. It´s great because with the team I get to snowboard even more and I can do all the big contests around the world. My goal for this season is to ride at the World Championships in Austria. They are happening in January 2015. My absolute dream is to ride the Air & Style in Innsbruck though. That would be so sick!

You have been doing a lot of contests, the last two years. What keeps you motivated to train?

It´s just a lot of fun for me to see where I am standing compared to other riders. It also feels nice to get a good result and see that all the training paid off!

You where in Australia this summer, how was the vibe? Did you manage to get on snow?

Yes I went to Perisher and to Falls Creek to start the season in August. It was really good to ride there, I didn´t really expect that. I hope that I get to go back next year, snowboarding in Australia is just a really cool experience!

What do you do during the summer months, in the off season? Do you chase the snow or take a break?

I work out a lot when I can´t go snowboarding. I also go snowboarding every summer but that’s usually just for a few weeks.

What kind of activities and hobbies do you have other than snowboarding?

I like to hang out with my friends, work out and I never say no to a good party
