Vans Hi Standard Series Mountain High Ca Recap

Vans made their way to Mt. High this past Sunday for the second stop of the Vans Hi Standard Series USA. Style is everything at the Vans Hi Standard with only one rule—nothing over a 720 allowed. For this stop, Darrell Mathes and Sam Taxwood joined the crew as the official event judges. They handed out the Van Doren Dollars to reward the riders that were ripping: did a proper method, a stylish front-side 360 or made that backside 180 Japan look as textbook as it could be.

After the jump session, all the riders gathered around the Vans tent and enjoyed a free lunch grilled by the Vans crew. Following lunch, we kicked off the rail jam. Now, the rail jam section of a Vans Hi-Standard is pretty close to your standard rail jam; there’s no limit to what you can do, but Judge Mathes and Judge Taxwood are tasked with calling out the tricks they want to see and throwing out those orange Van Doren Dollars to the first rider to do it and do it right. The entire field of riders crushed the rail features—some surprising us all by putting down heavy tricks on the step rail, such as a switch front-side board slide pretzels out.

Vans handed out a few generous but well-deserved checks to the top riders of the day. The big money went to:

Gilbert Madrid ($250 for the 15 and under division)
Haley Mattingly ($500 for the ladies)
Buzz Holbrook ($1000 for the dudes)
