Mike Basich first strapped on a snowboard in 1985 when he hiked the side of the run of Soda Springs Mountain Resort. Ever since then, the mountains just continue to get bigger and bigger. Flow was able to track down and catch up with Basich, discussing Area 241, snowboarding, world travelling and all the building he is continuously doing in order to feed all these passions.
What kind of activities do you do in the summer to maintain your winter riding shape?
I build a lot of stuff that keeps me in shape and inline of what I will do the following year. I am always building in the summer for the coming year.
With all the travelling you do for snowboarding… what would you consider your home mountain to be?
Area-241 for sure! I do ride at Sugarbowl a lot. Super rad place.
Tell us a little bit about Area-241?
Area-241 is a place for creative ideas to take on a life. It offers such a fun open space with snowboarding and photography. I hope to keep building that and adding to it, with art and the great outdoors there. It has been such a great place to test out boards and everything Flow makes and is working on.
What kind of upgrades have you made to your Sierra mountain cabin in Tahoe?
I finished the lift, which was huge! Super stoked to have that done. Still wanting to add lights and some cool night disco lights for night riding.
What is your current Flow setup?
I’m riding the Maverick. A lot. Sometimes the Darwin on deep snow. Riding the NXT2 bindings. I have been switching around with boots and been stoked on them all.
Where do you see the current direction of the snow sports industry?
I feel it is going to find a great customer commitment build. Things are getting tightened and loyal customers are the ones that will keep the healthy part of the sport breathing in the right direction. The way people buy things is always changing. It (snow sports industry) is going to have a big change that is still waiting to happen.
What was your favorite moment from last winter?
Filming with the Absinthe Films crew was pretty rad and felt really healthy for me. Kept me on my toes a lot.
Anywhere you are looking forward to riding next winter?
I hope Area-241 will have a great season. Last couple years have been pretty bad. There is still so much to have happen there.
What are some of your passions in life other than snowboarding? Activities, hobbies, studies… etc?
Building for sure! I built a tiny house on wheels this winter which was so awesome of an addition to the traveling world. Hope to have so much more of that.
How old is your dog Summit?
My dog Summit is now 7.
Any places you love travelling to, not related to snowboarding?
It is always about the snow
