South Lake Tahoe and Truckee, Calif./Nev. (Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014) – Cold overnight temperatures and recent snowfall have created ideal weather for opening-day preparations at Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort. Snowmaking is already underway at Heavenly and Northstar is on target to make snow this weekend; both resorts are set to open Friday, Nov. 21. Thanks to its high elevation, Kirkwood’s natural snowfall has begun to accumulate and the mountain is scheduled to open Saturday, Nov. 22.
“It’s great to see the arrival of cold temperatures and snow during October,” said Pete Sonntag, vice president and chief operating officer of Heavenly. “Opening day at all three resorts is less than one month away, and we are definitely in full-swing with snowmaking and preparations for a great winter. The excitement and anticipation of skiing and riding is alive at the resorts.”
Equipped with two of the world’s most sophisticated snowmaking systems, Heavenly and Northstar ensure the most reliable snow surface conditions along the west coast. In optimum weather conditions, Heavenly’s extensive snowmaking system is capable of producing three-and-a-half feet of snow across one acre in an hour and can cover 73 percent of the resort’s 97 trails in machine-made snow; and Northstar is able to open all of its lifts solely with machine-made snow.
The Best of Tahoe Resorts will unveil the best of what’s new at Lake Tahoe this winter. Heavenly will kick off the season with a free concert by Young the Giant on Saturday, Dec. 13 and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe will open in late December 2014 or early 2015 in South Lake Tahoe’s casino core; Northstar invites guests to tōst, a new tradition during which guests can sip a glass of bubbly every day at 2 p.m. on the mountain, and the inaugural tōst is set for Friday, Dec. 19; and guests can experience Kirkwood’s famed adventure through Expedition:Kirkwood – renowned for offering mountain guides and clinics, snow cat tours beyond the resort’s terrain and snow safety education and certification.
The Epic Pass, Tahoe Local Pass and Tahoe Value Pass provide access to the region’s three premier resorts—Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood—with the combined 10,270 acres of skiable terrain and three unique resort experiences. Season passes to the Epic Tahoe Resorts are still available at pre-season rates and offer every-day access to the slopes with fewer restrictions compared to other resorts’ season pass options.
