Snowboarding News | Sunday December 13, 2015 | Shared By: Snowboarder Mag

The Dirksen Derby is a one-of-a-kind, epic snowboarding event. The kind of weekend you put on your bucketlist. It’s an early winter reunion with a group of like-minded individuals who convene on Mt. Bachelor in order to not only notch the fastest times on the hand-dug banked courses, but also to do so while donating to a fantastic cause within the community of Bend, Oregon–helping local snowboarder Tyler Eklund, who suffered a snowboarding injury when he was younger, leaving him paralyzed, though still able to spend time on hill via a sit-ski. To support Tyler and his family, as well as bring the winter community together, Josh Dirksen created The Derby and in the past nine years, this banked slalom weekend has reached legendary, must-go status on snowboarding’s collective calendar. For the 9th annual event, Dirksen has partnered with Salomon Snowboards to expand the event and present the Dirksen Derby Film Festival, a short film and photography slideshow festival and competition open to the snowboarding and sit-ski communities. On Saturday, December 12th, the movies and photos were shown in Bend, but in order to bring the festival to those who weren’t able to attend in person, we are happy to present the Dirksen Derby Film Festival intro right here for your viewing pleasure.

So sit back and enjoy the above video, featuring the man whose brainchild continues to unite the snowboarding, splitboarding, and sit-ski communities at the start of every seasonJosh Dirksen, along with friends Gus Warbington, Peter Butsch, Alex Lopez and Adam Haynes. Filmed by Chris Edmands and Pete Alport and edited by Chris Edmands. We’re pretty sure Kayak.com will allow booking for December 2016, so make sure to mark the 10th Annual Dirksen Derby on your calendar to enjoy both the race and film festival in person.
