ELENA HIGHT AND SCOTTY LAGO SCORE HUGE AT NEW ZEALAND OPEN QUARTERPIPE
LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand (Aug. 4) - Elena Hight (South Lake Tahoe, CA) and Scotty Lago (Seabrook, NH) bombed the New Zealand Open quarterpipe Friday night with Elena boosting the biggest air for the women on the 20-foot lighted quarter while Scotty stomped a 1080 to win the men's best trick. But it was U.S. Olympic Team members Kelly Clark (West Dover, VT) and Mason Aguirre (Mammoth Lakes, CA) who hoisted the big trophies. Kelly's signature huge amplitude was definitely present, especially in the smooth backside air that gave her the win. Mason went for variety, throwing more combinations than anyone else in the field, including a silky backside 900 for the men's title. Other U.S. riders of note include Danny Davis (Highland, MI) with an ally oop rodeo 540 and Kevin Pearce (Norwich, VT), who dropped jaws with an enormous air to knuckle. Kevin walked away from the slam and will compete in Saturday's halfpipe finals, which keeps him in the running for the overall crown after winning the slopestyle contest on Thursday with Scotty taking second. Saturday's pipe final, featuring eight women and 16 men, is a family affair with Molly Aguirre (Mammoth Lakes, CA) joining bother Mason in the main event along with brothers Jack and Luke Mitrani (Mammoth Lakes, CA). Also riding for the women is Kelly Clark, the 2002 Olympic gold medalist. NEW ZEALAND OPEN
