Santa Fe Springs,
CA (November 18, 2003) – The Mountain Dew Pro Nationals of Snowboarding
arrive at Breckenridge Ski Resort December 12-14 to kick off the 2003-04
competitive snowboard season. Upwards of 100 athletes are expected to
compete, vying for more than $100,000 and the keys to a Ford Ranger FX4.
Locals Todd Richards, Chad Otterstrom, and Gretchen Bleiler as well as
notables Ross Powers, Danny Kass and Kelly Clark will be among those tackling
the Superpipe, the Slopestyle course and the Mountain Dew Rail Jam contest.
The Mountain Dew Pro Nationals will broadcast to a national television
audience, airing on NBC Sports on January 17 at 3:30 pm EST.
As the first major
North American competition at one of America’s top resorts for snowboarders,
the Mountain Dew Pro Nationals consistently draw the top names in snowboarding.
Joining expected Olympians such as Powers, Kass, Clark, J.J. Thomas, Tommy
Czeschin and Daniel Franck are many other big-time riders including Scotty
Arnold, Ben Hinkley, Hanna Beaman as well as up and comers Torah Bright,
Hannah Teter and Luke Mitrani. The athletes will be challenged by Breckenridge’s
18 ½-foot Superpipe and the Freeway Terrain Park that will feature
35 fresh creations this season including a
new Rainbow Rail, 7 new fun boxes and up to 15 jumps.
“The Mountain
Dew Pro Nationals at Breckenridge has become an annual kick off to the
snowboard season,” said Steve Van Doren, Vice President, Events
and Promotions at Vans. “With a world-class field and a world-class
mountain, the sixth edition of the Pro Nationals will be one of the best
yet.”
The Mountain Dew Pro
Nationals will consist of three events – Slopestyle, Superpipe and
Rail Jam. In Slopestyle, riders make an untimed run loaded with jumps,
a quarter pipe and hand rails with the run judged on consistency and level
of difficulty. In the Superpipe event, riders utilize Breck’s massive
superpipe walls to perform tricks judged on difficulty, execution and
height. The Mountain Dew Rail Jam features riders each taking a stab at
pulling off the toughest moves on a specially built competition rail in
a less formal setting, but with big cash still on the line.
